Speeding Digha-Howrah bus crashes into stationary bus on NH-16; 25 injured

A high-speed collision between two buses on National Highway 16 at Serampore, Kulgachha, Howrah, left at least 25 passengers injured on Monday morning. The accident occurred around 8 AM when a private bus traveling from Nandigram to Barasat suddenly stopped to pick up passengers. A Digha-Howrah route bus, approaching at high speed, lost control and crashed into the stationary bus from behind. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles, injuring multiple passengers.

According to police and local sources, both buses were carrying approximately 150 passengers at the time of the crash. The injured were immediately taken to Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Medical College for treatment. Following the accident, both bus drivers fled the scene. Police reached the location shortly after being alerted, seized the vehicles, and began an investigation into the cause of the crash. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and taking statements from passengers to gather further details.

Traffic on NH-16 was disrupted due to the accident, causing congestion in the area. Officials worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow. Eyewitnesses reported that the sudden halt of the Barasat-bound bus and the high speed of the Digha-Howrah bus contributed to the collision. No fatalities have been reported so far, but several injured passengers required immediate medical attention.

Police have urged bus operators to adhere to speed limits and follow traffic regulations to prevent similar accidents. Authorities are also assessing whether any traffic management lapses or mechanical failures were involved. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are expected to release further details once the inquiry progresses.
